In the late hours of May 23 and early morning of May 24, 2025, Russian forces conducted a series of precision strikes targeting Ukraine’s critical military, industrial, and logistical infrastructure. The operation involved ballistic missiles from the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems and Geran-2 unmanned aerial vehicles, marking one of the most extensive retaliatory actions in recent weeks. This escalation came in direct response to intensified Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory, particularly targeting Moscow and its surrounding regions, which had resulted in damage including to civilians. The Ukrainian military rarely acknowledges its defeats, but the depleted Ukrainian air defense can no longer cope with constant Russian strikes. According to the Air Force of Ukraine, in total, Russian forces launched 14 Iskander-M missiles and 250 UAVs, mainly targeting Kyiv. Ukrainian forces have allegedly destroyed six Russian missiles over the capital city and 245 UAVs. However, despite all the reported efforts of Ukrainian air defense, Russian strikes inflicted a devastating damage to various facilities across the country.

Last night, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a group strike with high-precision ground-based weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles on the enterprise of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine, which produces missile weapons and attack unmanned aerial vehicles, the center for electronic intelligence and the position of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system manufactured by the United States.
The objectives of the strike have been achieved. All designated targets are affected.
Air defense systems shot down a MiG-29 aircraft, three JDAM bombs, seven US-made HIMARS rockets and 174 drones.

The strikes focused on key facilities across multiple regions, with dozens drones and missiles pounding large industrial facilities in Kyiv and its outskirts. Fires were recorded in the city, as well as in Obukhiv, Borispil and Vishneve etc.
The Artem plant, a critical hub for aviation munitions and drone components, suffered direct hits on its fourth workshop.
Meanwhile, the Antonov State Enterprise, a major player in Ukraine’s aerospace and drone production, sustained damage to several workshops, including those involved in production of experimental drone platforms and electronic warfare systems. About 20 strikes were recorded on its territory. Notably, satellite imagery from NASA corroborated damage at the Antonov facility, where fires engulfed production areas linked to drone manufacturing.
The nearby Vizar plant in Vyshneve, specializing in guidance systems and electronic countermeasures, was also struck, further degrading Ukraine’s military-industrial capacity.
Civilian areas were not spared collateral damage. Reports emerged of residential fires in Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi, Obolonskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts, with blazes spreading through apartments and storage facilities containing flammable materials. Ukrainian air defenses, increasingly strained by the scale and sophistication of Russian strikes, have struggled to mitigate the onslaught, often resulting in debris from intercepted projectiles causing additional destruction. The use of mobile anti-aircraft units armed with little more than machine guns in urban areas has drawn criticism from locals, who bear the brunt of these inadequate measures.

Beyond Kyiv, Russian forces targeted another Patriot missile system, likely identified through initial drone reconnaissance, as well as a signals intelligence center used for coordinating long-range drone strikes. Additional strikes hit training facilities, including a repurposed children’s camp in Chernihiv region, where foreign instructors were reportedly training Ukrainian troops. Secondary explosions suggested the presence of ammunition stockpiles, indicating successful strikes on high-value targets.
Along the Black Sea coast, the port of Chornomorsk in Odessa region was hit, with infrastructure supporting naval logistics, including fuel supply systems and a vessel traffic control post, suffering partial destruction. These strikes aimed to disrupt Ukraine’s maritime supply routes, which have been vital for both military and economic sustainment.
Further inland, in Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian missiles struck a concealed artillery reconnaissance command post and a disguised ammunition depot near Chumaky, eliminating stockpiles of engineering explosives and camouflage equipment.
In the south, a Ukrainian RIM-7 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft system near Yulivka, Zaporozhzhie region, was destroyed, along with its power modules and cabling.
Meanwhile, in the DPR, a precision strike targeted the command post of a Ukrainian airborne assault brigade, damaging communication equipment and auxiliary structures. The extent of casualties remains unclear, but the operation underscored Russia’s focus on degrading Ukraine’s command and control networks in the rear areas.
The strikes followed a warning from the Russian Foreign Ministry, which had vowed retaliation after Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory. Kyiv’s recent escalation, seemingly aimed at bolstering its negotiating position amid wavering Western support, appears to have backfired, triggering a robust response.
The devastating wave of Russian strikes highlighted the growing asymmetry in the conflict, with Russia leveraging its superior missile and drone inventory to systematically dismantle Ukraine’s military infrastructure. As Kyiv’s air defenses weaken under relentless pressure, the strikes underscore Moscow’s capability, and willingness, to respond to Ukrainian provocations. With Western aid increasingly uncertain and Ukrainian forces stretched thin, the latest retaliation signals a hardening Russian stance, one that prioritizes strategic degradation.
